Social Studies: First Nations Art and Culture

Students have been exploring First Nations Art and Culture through books, weavings and sharing circles.

As we continue to discuss the importance of sharing circles and the origin of this practice, students are learning about braided Sweet Grass. We have decided to use Sweet Grass in place of our 'talking stick' when sharing thoughts.

Students are taking the opportunity study various forms of weaving and the skill behind this art.
Why was it an important form of art for the First Nations people?
How is it useful in their day to day life?
What stories do they tell?
What shapes and colors can you see?
