Safety Precautions

Good Afternoon Keeler Families, Safety Precautions at Keeler School The safety of all students and staff at Keeler School is of great importance. As such, we have established appropriate safety measures for the various situations that may occur and affect our staff and students. Fire drills are a long-standing expectation of everyone who congregates in a setting such as a school. We are required to have a minimum of six fire drills each school year. Teachers keep class lists with them during all drills and attendance is always taken. Parents or other visitors are expected to evacuate the building when the fire alarm is sounded. It is a reflection of the changes in our society that we must add variations to our safety drills. Today, February 25, 2020 we practiced a drill known as a "lockdown". The teachers instructed students of their role during a drill of this kind. All students were prepared and understood that this was a practice. No one is allowed to enter or leav

'We read The Gift of the Inuksuk and talked about what they are meant for. Some of them are meant for leading the caribou and others are for leading you the way back home. Some are to let you know that there is water nearby just in case of danger. Sometimes it tells you where to fish. There are seven or eight stones on an Inuksuk.' -Lily

Social Studies: First Nations Art and Culture

Image
Students have been exploring First Nations Art and Culture through books, weavings and sharing circles.    As we continue to discuss the importance of sharing circles and the origin of this practice, students are learning about braided Sweet Grass. We have decided to use Sweet Grass in place of our 'talking stick' when sharing thoughts.  Students are taking the opportunity study various forms of weaving and the skill behind this art.  Why was it an important form of art for the First Nations people? How is it useful in their day to day life? What stories do they tell? What shapes and colors can you see?

Book Clubs

We have been using decodable texts with some students to help them understand the relationship between the letters and their letter sounds. Before we begin reading the book, students go through the vocabulary words for that book which allows them to be more successful when reading the text.
