Dear Parents,             To celebrate the cookie dough fundraiser from last year we will be having a whole school pizza lunch on January 22, 2020.   There will be no charge to parents, thank you to School Council, and we will be ordering pepperoni, cheese, Hawaiian, vegetarian and gluten free options from Panago Pizza. Each student will receive up to 2 slices of pizza, should they want 2 slices, so please make sure to still send your child with snacks and some extra food for lunch, just in case they are still hungry. If your child has any food allergies, that we are not already aware of, please make sure to let the office know as soon as possible and if your child normally goes home for lunch, they are welcome to stay at the school that day at no extra charge. Keeler School’s Generosity Club has been brainstorming ways that we can help our friends in Australia, who are dealing with terrible bushfires. We have decided to have a popcorn sale to raise money to help with some of the costs.   Our popcorn sale will happen January 20-23 rd , 2020, at lunch time. We will sell bags of popcorn for $1.   All of the money raised will go to one of four foundations: Adelaide Koala Rescue – Helps take care of Koalas that have been hurt due to fires The New South Wales Rural Fire Services – Helps support Firefighters and their families CFS Foundation for Volunteer Firefighters – Helps Volunteer Firefighters who have lost their homes or have been hurt while fighting fires Beyond Blue – A foundation that helps survivors with counselling and other mental health support. Students have continued exploring the Parkland Region of Alberta in Social Studies this week. As part of the curriculum, First Nations perspectives, stories and events are woven into artwork, discussions and research.  This week students studied artworks by First Nations painter, Alex Janvier. Tsa Tsa Ke K'e-Iron Foot Place, a 1,600 square foot mosaic in Edmonton, was the inspiration for the abstract bird's-eye view art the class created. Students visualized the Parkland Region (land, water, wetlands and wildlife) and used oil pastels, water color and acrylic paint to express their understanding of the land. Students also learned of events in Alex Janvier's life and how his experiences have impacted his art. Along our journey, we also came to find that he attended a residential school when he was younger. Dear Keeler parents and/or guardians, Just wanted to let our families know that that the 2020 Accountability Pillar surveys are now open and that the parent surveys will be mailed out this week.  If you require a survey for a specific language translation, please contact Mr. Bane ( ndbane@cbe.ab.ca) .  The survey is open from January 13 th , 2020 to February 28 th , 2020. The Alberta government has a system for school authorities to consistently measure success and progress, called the  Accountability Pillar . The Accountability Pillar uses 16 measures that show communities how schools and school authorities are performing each year. Schools and school authorities use the results to identify areas for improvement and to help build their education plans.  This system helps the province, school authorities and schools track successes and improve the quality of education for students. Students were challenged to create a balloon car using the following materials: -1 paper plate -1 plastic bottle -three paper straws -1 balloon -1 rubber band -tape Groups worked together to design and create their cars. After identifying the various parts of the car and point of force, students tested their cars and were asked to reflect on their machines.  Was it a success? What made it a success? Several students have chosen to ‘read more independently’, improve their skills by ‘reading every night’, and ‘use the dictionary to look up words’ as part of their 2020 goals.  Through this literacy program, ‘Reading…Give it a Shot!’, students track their reading and receive collectable Canadian Wildlife Trading Cards. Students will receive one card upon every 30 minutes of reading. Students may trade these cards with classmates to collect all 24 cards.   The outcomes of this program include the following: -students read more than their minimum requirements and get hooked on the experience and joy of reading! -students respond to various genres/texts -students are introduced to new vocabulary -students become independent in their learning  -students independently look up definitions in dictionaries when coming across an unknown word
